Final Report

Final Report
9 December 2011

By being in the practicum class and also working in the communications department, I have learned a lot this semester.  I mainly worked on the Wellness TV show.  At first, it was really difficult for me to figure out how to manage my time and get enough hours.  All of the upperclassmen were very helpful, though, and tried their best to help everyone get hours. Hopefully, next semester I can get more and improve.  I would also like to get more involved with the other shows, as well.
Something I learned that I was not expecting to learn was about the broadcast industry.  I like how every Friday, people in the class shared articles they found about media and the industry.  By just listening to the article and class discussion, I really learned a lot.  It is good to learn about all of that, because hopefully I will be working in the industry one day.
By working on Wellness TV, I definitely learned a lot.  I knew how to do a package and everything from being in Mass communications in high school.  Coming here, though, it was a little different.  I only knew how to edit on a Casablanca and with Adobe Premier.  I kind of learned how to edit on the systems here this semester.  I have not edited a complete package by myself.  Next semester, I hope to know how to edit really well.
This semester, I learned how to run teleprompter and audio.  Teleprompter was basically the same as I was used to running.  Audio was a little different, though.  There are way more controls than I am used to, so I will have to practice to know how to run everything.  I really want to learn how to direct next semester.
I learned a lot about the cameras and wires we use to do packages.  Working in equipment checkout has definitely helped me.  I did not know much about cables and wires before coming here.  Justin has taught me a lot, tough and I feel comfortable with all of it now.  I also learned about the cameras.  I am pretty sure I know how to work all of them now.
This is not in regard to actual practicum hours, but through my work-study with John and Justin, I have learned a lot about FSC TV.  I know how to play movies, do the slide show and fix some things when they go wrong.  I learn more about it every day.
This semester has definitely been a learning experience and will prepare me for the next three and a half years.  I learned about the industry, packages, editing, technology and more.  I hope to improve my skills and be more involved with all of the shows there are to offer.  Time management is an important skill I have to work on to get all of the hours I need for practicum.  I am glad the professors and upperclassmen are always there to help whenever needed.  It makes learning about everything easier.
