Final Report

This semester in practicum was tough for me, but I still learned a lot.  I was working a lot for work study and it was kind of hard for me to get hours, but I tried whenever I could.  A lot of the time, I had to do interviews and packages Tuesday and Thursday before my 9:55 class.  On these days, I worked a lot with Maggie.  She was a great role model for me this semester and taught me a lot.
She taught me to always be prepared and also get things done well and on-time.  No matter what, she does not make excuses and always gets her work done.  I also learned from her to never be shy with interviews.  We would go to the cafeteria in the morning and get student interviews.  At first, I was afraid to go up to random people and ask for their opinion on some topic.  After the first couple times, it became easier and easier.  Student interviews are very important so I need to make sure they are the best they can be.
This semester I definitely got more comfortable interviewing, being on camera and editing.  I think I have found a good interviewing technique that works for me.  It was such an honor to be co-anchor with Dakota for Wellness TV this semester.  I love being on camera and that is what I feel most comfortable doing.  It was different for me because we did not use teleprompters.  I would always review my script several times before so I was less likely to mess up.  This definitely gave me memorization practice, which will come in handy if I become a reporter and have to go live.
As for editing, I did not get as much experience as I would have liked, but I get the gist of it.  If I was put into a situation where I had to edit something on my own, I think I could do it.  I really want to get more practice so I can teach the freshmen next year.
I learned a lot from Justin and John with work study.  Even though they were at their internships this semester and I was alone, they would always help me when I needed it.  I am way more comfortable with the TV station now.  I worked a lot on the slide show to make it look better.  I also learned about scheduling and uploading movies.  Also, I finally got the hang of doing equipment check out.  I know about all of the camera kits and equipment.
During the actual practicum class, I learned about new technology and a little bit about the industry.  Mostly people just discussed new things that were coming out.  There was some talk about different stations and networks, too.  I want to continue hearing about the industry because hopefully someday I will be in it.
Overall, this semester was tough with practicum because I was so busy but I still got to experience a lot.  I love working in the communications department because I learn so much every day.  I am so excited for next semester and to get even more involved with Wellness T and the department.
